Description
This is a vintage antique sample of barbed wire fencing. This sample features an Edward V. Wilkes patent dated June 17, 1879. This wire is called "Wilkes' Four Point Figure Eight Barb on One of Two Lines" by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 614-B). This wire features two twisted together round line wires. Barbs are four pointed made from two round barbing wirse. Barbing wires are bent into a staple shape and passed through each other enclosing one of the two line wires. Second line wire is then wrapped over barb helping to hold barbs in place. Barbing points are then bent outwards to hold barb to line. Sample is 18" in length. Sample shows light to moderate pitting. There are three barbs well spaced, and cut is well centered. There is some bending of barbing points, but no broken, or missing barbing points.
