    Description

This is a model kit by Testors Italeri for Willys Jeep No. 838. Though the box was opened, the contents are "new" and still sealed in factory plastic wrap (including the decals). The instructions are also present. According to the box, this kit is "Super Detailed; Only Jeep Kit in 1/24 Scale." The box corner and flap were torn when it was open, please see photo. From a nonsmoking estate collection.
From the box side: In 1940, the US General Staff ordered a competitive design contract for a light 4-wheel drive vehicle. Three firms participated and the proposal entered by Willys Overland was selected. Powered by a 4-cylinder 2200cc engine developing 54 hp, the Jeep was nearly indestructible and easy to maintain. The machine worked and soldiers who drove Jeeps became dependent upon its all-terrain durability. Jeeps were capable of climbing 60% grades and motoring over rugged, battle scarred countryside. It's not surprising, therefore, that more Jeeps were built than any other light vehicle -- nearly 650,000 were manufactured before the war's end. The British 8th Army in Africa was the first to deploy Jeeps, but they were eventually used by allied forces on all fronts. The go-anywhere Jeep was truly the father of off-road driving, and to this day modern Jeeps of more urbane design provide the same kind of versatility and 4-wheel-drive fun.
