The CoolTube PreAmp is the first and only onboard tube preamp for acoustic guitar!
The CTP-3 Cool Tube PreAmp produces a rich, full sound. It takes its name from innovative Takamine
technology that runs its 12AU7 dual-triode vacuum tube at very low voltages.
- so low that it stays cool to the touch with variable tube tone that can be adjusted from bright and brilliant to thick and warm.
The full-range EQ section uses shelving filters to sculpt bass and treble frequencies,
with semi-parametric shaping control over the midrange.
A control knob adjusts the frequency from 250Hz to 5kHz, and a quick response precision onboard chromatic tuner is standard equipment.
Other features include Mid and High cut switches for a second pickup.

I am often asked
"What does it sound like?"
The best way I can describe it is it's like the difference between playing
through a good tube amp vs. a transistor amp.
The tube produces an even harmonic waveform that preserves and enhances
the complex natural tone structure produced by an acoustic guitar.
Most players use adjectives like warm, bold, natural and woody to describe it.
What is the difference between the CTP-3 and the CTP-2 preamp - do they have the same tonality?
The CTP-3 has the same great tone musicians have come to love about the CTP-2 but with an additional parametric control.
(Think of the CTP-3 as a marriage between the CTP-2 and the CT4-DX preamps.)

Older Takamine preamps TV3N, TK4NT, TS-1, TS-2, PT007S, etc. are a different size and shape than the CTP-3
and are located in a different location on the guitars side; the mounting chassis of these preamps
WILL NOT
accommodate the CTP-3 preamp.
For those of you installing this pre-amp into your "G" series Takamine,
you will have to modify the end of your pickup lead to a RCA male style jack.
Custom made adapters are available for .95 with the order of a preamp.
The adapter simply plugs in and requires no modification to the guitar.
These custom adapters are available ONLY at the time of order
exclusively to clients who are purchasing a preamp directly from
Addicted To Tone Inc; the adapter is not sold separately.

Sometimes in this fast paced electronics driven world we lose touch with the “humanity”

I am a real person; I am not just a number.
I welcome your questions and speaking with you personally.

RETURNS & SHIPPING
AddictedToToneInc does not accept returns.
The item listed in this ad is designed to improve the tone
of your Takamine guitar or for replacing a defective component.
I can help you diagnose the problem with your Takamine system.
Please contact me before you order an item you do not actually need.
AddictedToToneInc does not accept returns because of a third parties ineptitude,
specifically “repair technicians” that do not know how to properly diagnose
possible defects of the individual components used in the Takamine electronic system.
AddictedToToneInc checks each component for possible electronic defect
when the new product is received from Takamine and
verifies its working condition once again before it is shipped.
~
Tested 100%
The item you are purchasing is inspected and tested before they are shipped to make absolutely sure everything is working 100%
Time is taken to check new product when it arrives from Takamine;
electronic components pass through another more thorough audio and electronics test before being packaged and shipped.
The vintage preamps and used components sold by AddictedToToneInc pass through this same testing process.
Non electronic parts like Tuners, Nuts, Saddles are carefully inspected and tested; any part that requires assembly is assembled.
Many sellers do not possess a working knowledge of the Takamine equipment they are selling and simply send merchandise without examining the item being sold.
As a guitarist, artist and former touring musician I understand how important this equipment is to the individual purchasing it;
most of my customers are casual players but for some of my clients the part being purchased is needed for work and making a livelihood
an extended downtime can make for some potentially hungry days!
My endeavors are not approached as a mere "numbers game" or how many boxes of product I can move,
for me it is much more personal,
most of my clients work very hard for their money;
I appreciate and respect the fact they have chosen me to do business with.
Takamine does a fabulous job with their electronics and there are very few incidents of manufacturer defect;
very, very few incidents but it does happen.
It is much easier for me to check the product for the customer before it is sent rather than wasting time discovering a defective part after it has shipped;
this is how I have always operated; it takes more of a commitment but my clients appreciate it – they know they can trust me to do the job right!
The testing process was originally started for the sake of my over-seas patrons but I quickly realized the value of it for all my clients!
Maybe I am just "old school" but this is the way I feel it should be done.
I have designed, created and employ special testing equipment for the Takamine preamps and electronic components
because it is your reputation as well as mine at stake when you walk on stage!
AddictedToToneInc hosts a special Facebook page that specializes in the science and use of the Takamine technology exclusively for our Takamine clients.
Thank you,

As you may or may not know...
Since the early 70's KAMAN Music was the sole distributor of Takamine guitars in the U.S.A.
Recently ESP Guitars and Takamine Guitars announced a partnership in which Takamine
instruments will be distributed exclusively exclusively through ESP Guitars in the U.S.A.
Because of this new chapter in American Takamine history some printed materials have yet
to be revised for the new ESP distributorship. For this reason, this sale is for preamp only,
it does not come with a "POP" Point Of Purchase glamour box.
Your CTP-3 PreAmp will be sent very carefully and safely packaged.
FAQ’s
Here are some of the most Frequently Asked Questions
I receive regarding the Takamine CTP-3 Preamp
CTP-3
~
Question:
What is the difference between the CTP-3 and the CTP-2 preamp - do they have the same tonality?
Answer:
The CTP-3 has the same great tone musicians have come to love about the CTP-2 but with an additional parametric control.
The Parametric EQ on the CTP-3 allows a musician to “zero” in on problem frequencies that are creating feedback and with pin-point surgical accuracy remove them
by reducing the gain associated with the particular cycle leaving the surrounding frequencies unaltered and natural sounding.
Slider style “Graphic EQs” do not offer this kind of precision.
If you are currently having feedback issues I would suggest the CTP-3 instead of the CTP-2.
(Think of the CTP-3 as a marriage between the CTP-2 and the CT4-DX preamps.)

Question:
How many Cool Tube Revisions are there?
Answer:
Here is an overview of the revisions – Takamine is constantly striving to improve the Cool Tube Preamp.
Year: 2015 the CTP-3 has arrived! A major step forward in the evolution of the Cool Tube Series. Not simply a CTP-2 “version 7” the CTP-3 is currently the flag ship model!
Revision 6 the latest incarnation of the Cool Tube preamp. The latest “revision” reflects the CTP-2 is compliant with part 15 of the American FCC regulations, similar to what wireless guitar and microphone systems passed through a few years back. Still the same great tone!
Revision 5 is the same electronically as the Rev. 4.A, the “revision” merely referring to the factory they were manufactured in.
Revision 4.A is the same electronically as the three, the “revision” merely referring to the factory they were manufactured in.
Revision 3, basically the same as the second revision but enhanced with longer lasting battery life and heavier duty battery tray.
The CTP-2 is identical to the CTP-1 but has the addition of an “artist” switch and a faster “warm-up” time. This was the first major electronic revision of the Cool Tube preamp.
Year: 2004
The CTP-1 debuts at the NAMM show and sets a new industry standard for acoustic guitar preamps.
~
Question:
Does changing the tube void my warranty?
Answer:
No. Sidenote: CTP-3 circuitry damage incurred by changing the tube incorrectly would not be covered by the warranty.
~
Question:
My POWER and STANDBY LED lamp does not stay on when my CTP-3 is warmed up or when I press the STANDBY button, what is wrong with my preamp?
Answer:
The CTP-3 Standby Power LED comes on and stays lit
ONLY
when the guitar is UNPLUGGED.
It is designed in this manner so your stage manager or a road crew member can turn on the preamp before the guitar is given to you with the tube warmed up and ready to go instantly.
When you plug an instrument cable into the guitars output jack the LED goes off to conserve battery life.
~
Question:
What is the “PWR” switch for on back of my CTP-3 preamp for and why do the instructions say “please do not touch it” I want to touch it!
Answer:
Interestingly the CTP-3 Preamp is sent from the Takamine factory with the PWR (POWER) Switch in the OFF position. The CTP-3 will function normally in this setting BUT you can no longer use the STANDBY switch to warm up the PreAmp or use the tuner without being plugged in. This is why it is recommend the PWR Switch be set to the ON position and left alone.
Something to consider: If someone were to unknowingly presses the STANDBY Switch while the guitar is unplugged the preamp would stay in STANDBY mode until an instrument cable was plugged in OR the batteries are drained completely. Not a big deal - but something to consider…
Side note: As an experiment I activated the CTP-3 STANDBY function and let the preamp remain in the standby mode thinking perhaps there would be an automated shutoff at some point. After 1 hour the PreAmp was still operating in standby mode and upon checking the battery voltage I found the drain to be very low, collectively between the four batteries. .03 volts.
~
Question:
The instructions at Takamine say the LED
Lamp of the CTP-3 should glow
solid red when the tube is warm, but mine never turns red.
Answer:
The CTP-3 Standby Power LED comes on and stays lit
ONLY
when the guitar is UNPLUGGED.
~
Question:
Does the CTP-3 standby allow the tube to stay warmed up without draining the batteries as much?
The one issue I have with my
CTP-1 is that I have to unplug the
guitar cable between sets to extend battery life and when I get back on stage it has to warm up again.
Answer:
Here is what I have noticed since I began counting LED flashes while checking the CTP-3 units before shipment:
I have never counted more than 20 LED flashes and have even counted as few as 8 before the tube is warmed up ready to go.
This has held true for the last 15 units when it occurred to me to start counting - I am using the same set of batteries to check with so the voltage is the same...
The CTP-3 has a much faster warm up period (10
- 20 seconds) and features a switch marked “Standby” to keep the tube performance ready at all times. This is really a great concert feature that allows guitarists to change instruments quickly during a live performance on stage where seconds tend to feel like hour! You probably do not need it on at home…
The CTP-3 standby does allow the tube to stay warmed up without as much battery drain as experienced on the CTP-1.
~
Question:
How does the tuner function work / activate?
Answer:
When you press the tuner button once the tuner LED stays lit and you can hear the guitar.
W
hen you press the tuner button twice the Tuner LED flashes
and now you are tuning in "Mute" mode, you cannot hear the guitar.
A
third press restores you to the performance (no tuning) mode.
