Figurative objects, such as spurs & bits have always been "Top of the Line"; the most distinctive, unusual, scarce and expensive to create and own. In spurs & bits, there are only a few figurative designs; mostly birds (tropical birds & storks are known on antique spurs), Rattlesnake & Eagle motifs. This set includes a hand forged & silver inlaid Rattle snake figurative small, pony size bit, a finely made single ear headstall hand embroidered with pitiado (cactus) fiber, and a fancy set of 4 color cotton reins with 3 color candy striped pattern and 3 color hand braided yarn teardrop knot decorations. This kid's Padre was undoubtedly wealthy, perhaps Head of the Spread; as most kids North or South of the border didn't own their own pony.
This is a single ear style headstall with 2 layers of leather that are stitched together. The leather of the headstall has a hand embroidered pitiado center decoration made from cactus fiber from the Agave cactus; the same plant that produces Tequila. All pieces of the headstall match in color and are supple. When hanging, the headstall is about 20" from the top to the bit loops. The ring bit loops have double leather concho decorations secured with leather thongs. This 11/16" wide headstall has an adjustable buckle on one side, with a nickel plated roller buckle fastened with a nickel plated rivet. The single ear strap also has embroidery, and is fastened with 2 nickel plated rivets at the single ear connections. There is a 1" stain to the leather headstall above the buckle between the 2nd & 3rd holes, but is not distracting. Headstalls get wet and tear & fall apart from naturally occurring horse sweat. Add to this the horrible tanning process used by most Mexican leather tanners, and you can see why Headstalls are very rare; especially in fine condition. This Headstall is in used, well taken care of condition; supple, and with no damage, repairs or alterations.
This small, hand forged silver inlaid snake pattern Iron bit is in fine condition; the cheek pieces are 5 3/16" long and the inside mouth bar measurement is about 4 1/8"; very small and made for the smaller mouth of a pony. This fancy, hand forged figurative coiled Rattle Snake bit has silver inlaid cheek pieces with a domed coin conchos that affix the stylized coiled Rattle Snake cheek pieces to the Mardueno style mouth bar. The coins appear to be 5 centavo Eagle coins from the late 1930's or so (date side is inside). The top sides of the Iron bit have the standard ring bit loops to attach the headstall, with silver inlaid stylized decorations. The silver inlaid cheek pieces of the Iron snake's tails taper at the bottom ends, and are shaped to hold the upper rein chain rings. The coiled rattlesnakes have dozens of horizontal silver inlays, and a small silver panel on the snake's head. All of the silver inlays are intact, and left in dark, unpolished, untouched condition that collectors love. The unusual Mardueno style mouth bar appears to be cast brass with 4 line engravings on the top and bottom, with the original 2 copper crickets inside the tongue extension used to help keep the horse's mouth moist. The bit is complete, with both sets of original chains; i.e., the slobber chain and about 9 1/4" long rein chains. The chains also appear to be made of brass, with hand made Iron end rings, swivels and slobber chain connector. This is a fine condition silver inlaid bit, with no missing silver inlays, with a nice dark aged patina to the silver inlays and natural aging to the Iron. Collectors love this untouched patina, and fine, untouched examples like this are hard to find. As is typical, the Headstall and bit are unmarked.
This set has a set of kids size hand twist braided 2 strand closed end cotton reins that are sun faded.
The closed end reins are about 30" long (60" overall) x each of the 2 strands are 3/16" diameter. The overall measurement of this set is about 32" from the top of the headstall to the bottom of the rings when hanging (see image). There are (2) double row connectors to secure the bit rings to the reins. The end of each rein has a small loop that acts as a connector for the double loops that attach the bit rings. These double loops have a knot at the end that fits inside the small loop connector and is held in place with the braided knot.
Each rein has a braided 2 color teardrop yarn knot decoration, 2 color yarn end knots, 2 color yarn swell center decorator knots. This set has genuine aging, and in used, well taken care of condition with no damage, repairs or alterations.
This Handsome, eye appealing set with a silver inlaid Figurative snake bit would fit into any Bit, Pony, Bridle, Headstall, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Folk art collection or Western Americana display; and could be used or kept as a collectible / conversation / decorator piece. This would also be perfect as a wall hanger or on a saddle in any Man /Kid cave or Den with a Western, Charro, Charita, Vaquero, Old West, Horseman, Horsewoman, Horse kid, Horse Trapping, Equestrian, Pony, Mexican or South of the Border theme or display. It is very difficult to find an eye appealing silver inlaid Rattlesnake pony size bit and fancy headstall & rein set.
