The Ghau - A portable Tibetan shrine
The Tibetan Gau is an original as it is worn by many Tibetans. It can be opened at the back. It has a small disk in front, in which you can see an old Buddha Puja statue, an amitayus.
Amitayus is the Buddha who gives us a long life and increases our merits and wisdom.
The Gau has a beautiful top, finely worked! All around is a Tibetan lotus flower pattern.
The front surface is brass. The back is made of tarnished old copper. The Gau is tied with a string. I didn't open the Gau because I wanted to leave it in its original state. A similar, but large Gau, which I once opened, I photographed below. Inside are fabrics printed with mantras and a small statue.
The Tibetan bag can be hung around the neck, the "strap" is made of yak leather and has a total length of approx. 60 cm. Small pouches, also made of yak leather, are attached to the yak leather. The bags are sewn up, you can't look inside and they contain Tibetan medicinal herbs. They are said to protect against disease.
