Description
This is a vintage antique sample of barbed wire fencing. This sample features a John C. Merrill patent dated December 26, 1876. This wire is called "Merrill's Twirl Four Point Barb on Heavy Gauge Buffalo Wire on Flat Sided Round Line, "by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 156-B ) This wire features a single heavy gauge line wire which has two rounded, and two flat sides. Barbs are four pointed and are made from two round barbing wires. Barbing wires are made into two staple shapes, which are nested together, and wrapped together horizontally around the line wire. . Sample shows light oxidation. There are three barbs. Barbs are well spaced,and cut is well centered. There is some bending of barbing points, and possibly a broken point.
