    Description

Antique Vietnamese General Ngo Quyen on Battle Horse
An incredibly artistically and historically appealing piece.
Acquired in Saigon around 1940.  It could well be older than that.
In the early 1940’s a dashing young couple left the US heading for the Far East to work for the State Department.  For the next few decades they lived and traveled abroad, mainly in the Orient. Quickly developing  a love for antiquities of all kinds,  they ultimately amassed an enormous collection of art,  antiques and antiquities.  No souvenirs for these two - no, they avidly sought out genuine articles of beauty and significance.  The estate sale this weekend housed the largest private collection of oriental antiquities I have ever seen.  It was my great privilege to attend and purchase a small part of their collection, some which I will add to my personal treasure trove, and some will sell.
Ngo Quyen, formally King Ngô, was also a warlord and Vietnamese monarch who reigned the independent kingdom of Tinh Hai, ruling from 939–944.
Ngô Quyền's birth, according to Vietnamese tradition, has it that he was bathed with strange luminosity and three strangle black moles were seen on the baby's back, which were signs of his future greatness, and the mother named him "Quyen", meaning authority and power.
At the Battle of Bạch Đằng River in 938 near Hạ Long Bay in northern Vietnam the military force of the Vietnamese Principality of Jinghai, led by Ngô Quyền defeated the invading forces of the Chinese state of Southern Han and put an end to centuries of Chinese imperial domination in Vietnam during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. It was considered the turning point in Vietnamese history.
Size is 19" long, 7" depth, and 13-1/4" high.
Condition:   He looks absolutely stunning on display,  But there are multiple repairs:  Back legs, neck, tips of headdress.  I have tried to photo these places so you can better judge the condition.  Last 4 photos are of the damaged areas.
I would not be at all hesitant to display this piece.
Were it not for the repairs, I would be offering this piece at 0.
