This is a Fine, Fancy, Antique, Ornate, high quality, hand forged, custom made, double mounted silver inlaid & engraved heel bands, shanks, rowels, and buttons, with exceptionally fine detail & craftsmanship. You will see 100 pairs of spurs before you see one with the rare custom-made round rowel feature. These spurs are painstakingly inlaid with dozens and dozens of hand chiseled inlays; then, meticulously inlaid with silver & hand engraved. It must have taken weeks to create a fine quality, intricately inlaid & engraved pair of spurs such as this. These profusely inlaid spurs are as good as it gets. Every piece of metal on these spurs are silver inlaid and engraved, including both the tops and bottoms of the shanks, the rowel pins, and the inside button, showing great attention to detail.
Only a wealthy gentleman would have been able to commission such a fine pair of custom-made spurs. These spurs are heavy for their size; 2 pounds 6.6 ounces. They are completely handmade, using only the simplest of hand tools, i.e., hand forged, hand filed, hand chiseled, hand drilled & hand silver inlaid, and hand silver engraved. The inside measurement of the heel bands at the open end is about 3 1/8” and will fit a large size boot. These spurs, measure about 6 1/4" long overall, with heavy 3/8" thick heel bands that are 1 1/4" tall and domed on the outside curvature. The entire outside heel bands, including the rounded ends, have 16 horizontal lines of silver inlaid borders, including 4 silver inlaid and zig zag engraved lines, and 2 Aztec silver inlaid 3 line punch dot decorated panels above and below the center pane. The center panel is a 6-line Aztec panel with a combination of punch dot and zig zag engraving, en suite with the inside heel bands. Normally, this type spur would have the inside heel bands inlaid in the traditional diagonal striped pattern. However, the entire inside heel bands, including the rounded ends, have 16 horizontal lines of silver inlaid borders, including 4 silver inlaid and zig zag engraved lines, and 2 Aztec silver inlaid 3 line punch dot decorated panels above and below the center pane. The center panel is a 6 line Aztec panel with a combination of punch dot and zig zag engraving, en suite with the outside heel bands. It is very difficult to hand chisel a curved surface, and this is as fancy and detailed heel band silver inlaid and engraved patterns as you will find. The engraver purposely used only punch dot (stippled) and zig zag engraving for eye appeal and contrast to reflect light and show the extremely inlaid and engraving details.
This pair of double silver inlaid and engraved ornate patterns is much more work, and more costly; demonstrating this is a custom pair of spurs. The inside heel bands are identical to the outside heel bands. The difference in the inside and outside are the different silver inlaid and engraving patterns of the buttons, shanks and rowel pins. This fancy two pattern double silver mounting found on custom made spurs was expensive and allows the wearer to simply change the spur straps to have either side of the heel bands worn toward the outside: thus, having two different spur designs in the same pair of spurs. The outside horseshoe shaped swinging buttons are hand forged, about 1" tall and 7/8" wide, en suite with the shanks. Both have 4 silver inlaid zig zag engraved panels. The domed inside swinging buttons have a 3-line Aztec silver inlaid & zig zag engraved pattern with a center silver dot. All 4 Iron button swingers are identical, have matching aged patina to the spurs, and are original, as are all 4 silver inlaid & engraved buttons.
Both the outside and inside shanks are shaped in a scarce horseshoe motif. The outside shanks have 3 silver panels, ornately zig zag engraved and shows the normal slots for attaching a horseshoe to the hoof with nails. The inside shanks have 3 silver panels, punch dot and zig zag engraved and shows the normal slots for attaching a horseshoe to the hoof with nails. Both the tops and bottoms of the shanks are silver inlaid with stripes that are zig zag engraved; a feature only found on custom made to order spurs.
Round rowels are rare; especially when filigreed, double mounted, and ornately inlaid and engraved. Both the inside and outside hand forged 6 spoke (tines) rowels are filigreed with 6 individual cut outs, with a Nautical ship Captains wheel motif. The inside of the wheels has 6 silver inlaid line and punch dot decoration. The 6 tines have zig zag engraving on both the inside and outside of the outer round silver inlaid and zig zag engraved 3-line Aztec patterns. Being handmade, the rowel tines are about 2 3/4" across. Being only 1/8" thick, the inlayer / engraver was simply showing off his expertise in executing these ornate double-sided inlays on such a thin piece of Iron. The inside rowel pins have a small silver domed concho, but the outside pins have 5 silver inlaid panels on bullet shaped rowel pins; another attention to detail.
These spurs are complete with fine, large size, fancy, double layered calf skin lined original period leather spur straps with 3 dimensional pitiado (cactus fiber) hand embroidering in a Matching Aztec pattern with a tooled stippled background with early style metal eyeholes and buckles. Of the dozens and dozens of silver inlays on these connoisseur quality spurs, all of the silver intact. It is extremely difficult to take images of a shiny object; and I took dozens of images in an effort to depict the finely detailed engraved silver inlays, and eBay now only allows 12 pictures, although I uploaded many more.
These finely detailed, double mounted round rowel spurs are in excellent condition overall, with light normal wear; and an even, light aged patina that collectors love to see. These fancy, finely inlaid and engraved Investment grade spurs come from South of the Border, down Old Mexico way; and is a lost art in hand made spurs that is quickly becoming extinct. These flashy, double mounted 2 pattern spurs would fit into any Spur, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charrita, Mexican, Old West, Western, Wild West, Reenactment, South of the Border, Folk art, or Western Americana collection or display.
